The Olean Youth and Recreation Department will hold “Learn To Skate” lessons at the William O. Smith Center in October.  The three-session lessons will take places on Saturday afternoons, October 4th, 18th and 25th, from noon-1:00.  The cost is $30, and the price includes skate rentals.  To register, call the Rec Center at (716) 373-RINK.  Pre-registration is not required.

The Olean Elk’s Lodge #491 will hold a Meat and Seafood Raffle on Saturday, October 25, from 5-9pm, at their 209 West State Street location.  The $5 admission includes food and other refreshments.  Along with the raffle, there is a basket raffle and other games and prizes.  The doors open at 5pm, with raffles starting at 6:00.

The Lewis Run Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Halloween Vendor Show on Saturday, October 25, from 11-4, at the fire hall on Main Street.  Proceeds will benefit the Fire Department.

Arkport Cycles in Hornell will host a free Halloween/Toys for Tots event on Saturday, October 25, from 112:30-2:30, at their location on Industrial Park Road.  There’s free candy and games, free refreshments and a horse-drawn wagon ride.  They are also asking for donations of a new, unwrapped toy towards their annual Toys for Tots Drive.

St. Bonaventure University’s Physician Assistant Program’s Students Without Borders have set up a Haunted House that will take place Friday and Saturday, October 24-25, from 7-11pm both nights, at Francis Hall on the SBU Campus.  Admission is $10 for children under the age of 14…$15 for ages 14 and up…Bona students will be admitted for $5, and there’s a special “Family of Five” price.  Proceeds will be used to fund the organization’s mission trips.  For more information, check their Facebook Page at SBU-SWOB.

The City of Olean Youth and Recreation Department’s Girls Youth Basketball season is getting started. The schedule breaks down as follows:

Registration:  October 20-31 from 3-5:30pm at the former St. Johns School, 921 North Union Street. The cost is $30 per player, due at sign-ups.

Player evaluation:

4th Grade: Monday, November 3 at 6pm

5th Grade: Monday, November 3 at 7pm

6th Grade: Tuesday, November 4 at 6pm

Practices:

Monday, November 10 through Thursday, November 13: Two practices at 6pm and 7pm

November 17 through December 17: One practice per week, either Tuesday or Thursday at 6pm or 7pm

Games: November 17 through December 17, Mondays and Wednesdays, at 6pm or 7pm

The Olean Area Farmers Market is open for the season, in Olean’s Lincoln Park.  There are new hours this year, with the Market open from 9am-1pm on Saturdays.  The Market offers a wide variety of locally-produced products, from food to flowers and crafts.  The Market offers a credit card terminal, and will accept SNAP EBT Cards.  The Olean Farmer’s Market participates in the FreshConnect $2 Check Program, allowing SNAP Benefits users to double their money.  The Market only accepts farmers and crafter who produce their own products.  The Market will run through November 1, with two special holiday markets at Thanksgiving and Christmas.  More information can be found by contacting Rita Schichtel at:  farmersmarketofolean@gmail.com.

The Salamanca Central School District and the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cattaraugus County are sponsoring a Pumpkin Smash event on Saturday, November 1, from 10-noon, at the corner of Front and Fern Avenues.  Bring your hollowed out pumpkins…and the smashing tools will be provided.  Please make sure there are no candles, lights or plastic decorations in the pumpkins.  The Cooperative Extension will be handing out composting information at the event.

The Olean City School District, Canticle Farm and the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cattaraugus County will sponsor a pumpkin smashing event on Saturday, November 1, from 10-noon, at Canticle Farm, 3809 Old State Road in Allegany.  Smashing tools will be provided…make sure your hollowed-out pumpkins are free of seeds, candles, and plastic decorations.  The smashed pumpkins will go into community composting at Canticle Farm.  Come and learn about composting on Saturday, November 1!

McKean Residents Auxiliary is doing a Fall Bazaar at Sena Kean-Manor, 17083 Rt 6 Smethport, on November 15, 2025. The time is 9am-2pm. They are currently looking for vendors. The Allegany County Office for the Aging is seeking volunteers to man their Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program.  The program offers free income tax assistance for low to moderate-income Allegany County residents.  Volunteer Tax Counselors are trained and certified to help people who are ages 55 and over.  The Office for the Aging partners with AARP and the IRS to provide this service.  If you are interested in joining the team of volunteers, call (585) 268-9390, and ask for Karen.

The City of Olean Youth Bureau and Recreation Department will begin its 2025/’26 Fall-Winter After School Recreation Program on Wednesday, September 3.  The After School Program runs Monday-Friday, from 3-5:30pm, at 921 North Union Street, the former St. John School.  The program operates throughout the school year, with healthy snacks provided.  Among the activities are Foosball, Ping-Pong, Air Hockey, Board Games, Basketball, Arts & Crafts, and help with homework.  All of this is provided free of charge.  For more information, call (716)376-5698.
